When someone talks about the Canadian point system, they refer to Canada’s Express Entry system. The Express Entry is an online point-based system for selecting skilled applicants who have the potential to immigrate to Canada. The system features a Canada immigration points calculator to assess foreign workers’ ability to move to Canada based on multiple factors.
Understanding Canada’s Express Entry immigration points system
The express entry system comprises three economic migration programs:
Applicants who express interest in Express Entry under these immigration categories get scores based on multiple parameters. Canada PR points are based on an applicant’s age, work experience, education, language skills, and others.
This scoring system is known as the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), and a candidate’s total score is called the CRS score.
Anyone planning to immigrate to Canada must create an Express Entry profile by indicating all factors that together determine total scores for the applicant. All eligible profiles receive a CRS score out of 1200 points. Every two weeks, the government of Canada conducts express entry draws to invite the highest ranking applicants to submit a complete profile for Canadian immigration.
Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) publishes a cut-off score for each express entry draw. Applicants with points above the cut-off score get an Invitation to Apply for a Canadian PR visa application.
Points for Federal Skilled Worker Program
The Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSW) is one of the three economic immigration programs linked with Canada’s Express Entry system. FSW uses a Canada PR point system and the CRS score.
Applicants interested in federal skilled worker program must calculate their CRS score and meet the minimum eligibility requirements to qualify for the program. The FSW point grid grants points out of 100. To qualify, one must obtain at least 67 points out of 100. These scores are given based on one’s age, work experience, education, language skills, job offer, PNP nomination, etc.
While it may look similar to the CRS score, applicants obtain different points for the factors in the FSW program and the CRS score.
Receiving 67 points out of 100 in the FSW category makes you eligible for the express entry system. The maximum score in the FSW category qualifies you to get the CRS score. Candidates applying under other programs, FST and CEC, do not need to calculate their points separately to discover eligibility. Instead, they just need to meet the program’s minimum eligibility criteria.
