Australia PR Process Explained: Step-by-Step Guide for Indians in 2025

Australia permanent residency has forever been a popular aspiration among Indian professionals, all in the name of enhancing their quality of life, exposure abroad, and long-term career opportunities. Through streamlined PR programs structured with opportunities since the beginning of 2025, Australia continues to attract skilled workers, especially from India.

If you plan to apply for Australia PR from India, here is a simplified step-by-step procedure giving the applicant a clear understanding of the requirements.

Check Your Eligibility

You should check first whether you fall into “eligibility” under Australia’s General Skilled Migration program. This is a points-based system, whereby you must obtain at least 65 points to be eligible. Points are attributed to:

  • An applicant’s age (between 18 and 45 years)
  • English language proficiency (IELTS/PTE)
  • Educational qualifications
  • Work experience
  • Partner qualifications (optional)
  • State/territory nomination (extra points)

The occupation must be listed in either the Medium to Long-term Strategic List (MLTSSL) or the Short-term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL).

Skills Assessment

Along with related assessments, applicants require positive skills assessments for their occupations (e.g., ACS for IT or Engineers Australia for engineering works). It means that your qualifications and work experiences are verified.

Normal documents required include:

  • Degree certificates
  • Employment letters
  • Resume
  • Copies of the passport
  • Processing time ranges between 6 and 12 weeks

Prove English Proficiency

Applicants must provide evidence of IELTS, PTE Academic, or TOEFL iBT scores to prove their English proficiency; the minimum requirement will be a band of at least 6 in each module (or section, depending on the test). The higher the scores, the higher the points attributed; for example:

IELTS 7 = 10 points

IELTS 8 = 20 points

Points are to be counted from the date of Invitation.

Submit Expression of Interest (EOI)

Next comes submitting an Expression of Interest on SkillSelect, the Australian internet-based portal. Submission of an EOI expresses the intent to move but is not, in fact, an application for a visa.

Some main details include:

  • Nominated occupation
  • Preferred visa subclass (189, 190, or 491)
  • Claimed points
  • Preferred State/Territory (if nomination is being sought)

You go into a pool where you are ranked according to points, and those with higher points receive invitations faster.

Apply for State Nomination (if applicable)

Applicants for Subclass 190 (state sponsored) or Subclass 491 (regional sponsored) applied for nomination by a state or territory. Every state has different lists and criteria.

The successful nomination has given:

  • 5 extra points (Subclass 190)
  • 15 extra points (Subclass 491)

Invitation and Visa Application

Upon selection, an Invitation to Apply (ITA) will be issued. You then have a 60-day window to file your full PR application online.

Documents required:

  • Police clearance
  • Medical exam results
  • Proof of relationships (if spouse or dependents are to be included)
  • Financial records (if requested)

Waiting For The Approval

Depending on profiles and visa subclasses, the process typically takes about 6 to 10 months. After approval, your permanent residency visa for Australia will be issued, including for dependents.
