Australian visas should go to younger skilled migrants- Grattan Institute Says

  • Think tank the Grattan Institute and others are calling for a revamp of skilled program for Australia Immigration.
  • The report suggests that post-COVID, Australia should shift from taking older workers with less proficient English to younger and more highly skilled workers, which is due to report back by July.
  • In the months leading up to March 2020, about two million people arrived in Australia each month, including returning Australians and short-term visitors.
  • In 2019-20, the report said 194,400 people were added to Australia’s population via migration.
  • The report said that if we want to innovate our businesses, grow the economy and slow the rate of our aging population, we need to stop taking older migrants with poor English language skills.
  • It makes several recommendations, including a call to stop targeting Australia PR Visa at temporary skills shortages via occupation lists. Instead, make employer-sponsored visas available for workers in all occupations, provided they earn at least $80,000 a year.
  • Grattan’s report suggests the points test should be subjected to an independent review focused on ways to better select younger, skilled workers.
  • It also requires the Department of Home Affairs to improve the administration of Australia Immigration process and speed up processing times.
