Canada Sets Immigrants Up for Success!

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has released the Settlement Outcomes Highlights Report, which summarizes and analyses the Canada immigration experience based on the challenges and successes of immigrants from 2015 to 2019. The report finds that Canadians are pleased with the settlement services offered to newcomers and view these services as crucial for setting immigrants up for a successful future.

Settlement services prove vital to an immigrant’s experience in Canada–by improving English or French language skills, assisting in the job search process, fostering community connections, etc. Between 1st April 2015 and 31st March 2019, above one million Canada PR visa holders and protected persons availed settlement services. 48% were economic-class immigrants, 25% were family-class immigrants, and 23% were protected persons and refugees.

Most immigrants felt these services were valuable and satisfied their needs, and 92% said their community welcomed newcomers. They said that the services increased their knowledge of living in Canada, improved their communication skills, prepared them for getting jobs in Canada, and connected them to community organizations. The report found that IRCC has to enhance its services to make newcomers aware of settlement services, encourage them to use these services, fill information gaps, and identify other barriers.

As per the report, the settlement journey varies for many immigrants. IRCC will examine these outcomes to improve the services and satisfy the individual needs. The report will also help communities to take all steps to welcome newcomers. The findings are essential for addressing socio-economic gaps faces by several new Canadians and will help break down the systemic obstacles to success that newcomers face.
