Four Indian-Origin win the Canadian Immigrant Award

Canada’s nation-wide Immigrant Award program has recognized 25 immigrants – including entrepreneurs, academics and activists – for their remarkable achievements and contribution to the country. Hundreds of names were nominated, of which 75 were shortlisted and ultimately 25 were chosen by a panel of judges and through online polling by over 72,000 voters. Four of the selected awardees are immigrants from India, who have made significant impact in their fields of work:

Kanwar Dhanjal – CEO, Just Instruments Inc.

Currently leading a company that specializes in instrument calibration, he was formerly the president of the Indo-Canadian Chamber of Commerce, and currently serves as the Brampton Board of Trade Director.

Basavaraj Halli – Co-founder and CTO, GoFor Industries Inc.

His company provides delivery services for Canada’s construction industry, and has recently witnessed an expansion into 60 prime urban markets within USA and Canada.

Shanthi Johnson – Dean and Professor, School of Public Health, University of Alberta

A recognized leader in the areas of healthy aging and health promotion, she has conducted pertinent research on falls prevention among senior citizens, and on social isolation with a specific focus on senior citizens belonging to immigrant and refugee communities.

Harsh Thakkar – Manager, DIVERSEcity Interpretation and translation Dervices

As manager of the social enterprise, he leads more than 300 translators and interpreters towards the goal of promoting cross-cultural communication within Critish Columbia. He also advocates for the interests of international students, and has previously volunteered at the Canadian Cancer Society.

The awards signify the value of immigrants in Canadian society, and indicate that the country provides ample opportunities for immigrants to adapt and succeed in their chosen industry. Indians are specifically well-represented on the list, as well as in key industries within Canada. India continues to remain the top source country for immigrants to Canada.
