What Is The Procedure To Apply For A PR Visa For Australia?

Australia is a popular destination for people looking for a better quality of life, a stable economy, diverse cultures, and stunning natural beauty. With a permanent resident (PR) visa, you can live, work, and study in Australia indefinitely, enjoying various benefits and rights. But how do you get an Australia PR visa?

Application PR Process for Australia

The application process for an Australia PR visa varies depending on the visa option you choose, but generally, it involves the following steps:

  • Check the Occupation List:

As the PR application is based on skills, it is crucial to verify if your skills are in demand in Australia. The SOL (Skilled Occupation List) is used to determine eligibility. You must select an occupation from the SOL that closely matches your own.

  • Skills Assessment

Once you’ve chosen an occupation from the SOL, you must undergo a skills assessment. This involves an Australian assessing authority evaluating your education and professional experience. The assessment must be completed before applying for the visa and can take up to four months.

  • English Language Proficiency Test

For Skilled Migration applications, proving English language proficiency is essential. There are two levels recognized:

  • Superior English: Worth 20 points in the GSM points test.
  • Proficient English: Worth 10 points in the GSM points test.

The English test score directly impacts your overall point score, making it a critical component.

Accepted English Tests:

  • IELTS (both Academic and General Training versions are generally accepted).
  • Occupational English Test (OET) for medical and allied health professionals.
  • Other accepted tests include Pearson PTE, Cambridge Test of English, and TOEFL iBT.

  • Competent English:

For most skilled visas, proving at least Competent English is required. Citizens of certain countries (Canada, New Zealand, United Kingdom, United States, and Ireland) are exempt from the English test.

  • Submit Expression Of Interest (EOI)

This is the initial step in applying for PR. You submit an EOI online via SkillSelect, a centralized service facilitating the submission and tracking of applications. Alongside personal details, you provide information on education, occupation, and English proficiency.

  • Await Invitation

After submitting the EOI, the wait time for an invitation depends on your points and the occupation you’ve applied for. Certain occupations, like IT professionals, may have longer wait times due to higher application numbers.

  • Health Check

A mandatory health examination is required as part of the visa application process to ensure applicants meet Australia’s health standards for entry.

  • Character and Police Certificate Requirements

You may need to submit police clearance certificates to meet character requirements. A good character is essential for entry into Australia, and police certificates for the past 10 years of residency may be required.

  • Visa Grant

Once all necessary documents are provided, a designated case officer reviews your case. If all documentation is correct and complete, you will receive your permanent residence visa, typically communicated via email.
