USA Immigration Temporarily Suspended, Canada booms

On 22^nd April, the U.S. President will sign an Executive Order, temporarily suspending immigration to USA. The suspension is expected to continue for 60 days for permanent resident visas (green cards) – subject to some unspecified exceptions. This move is meant to contain the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic and protect the American workforce that has been economically impacted by the crisis.

While Canada has implemented emergency measures and imposed travel restrictions on certain foreign nationals, it is still accepting and processing visa applications – showcasing commitment towards accommodating immigrants, international students and temporary foreign workers. In fact, Canada continues to invite candidates to apply for permanent residence (PR) through federal and provincial immigration programs.

Ever since travel restrictions were imposed on 16^th March, invitations to apply for PR and provincial nomination have been extended under several Canada immigration pathways:

• The Express Entry System conducted rounds of invitations or ‘draws’ on 18^th March, 23^rd March, 9^th April, 15^th April, and 16^th
• The British Columbia Provincial Nominee Program held draws on 17^th March, 30^th March, 6^th April, 7^th April, 16^th April, and 21^st
• The Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program held draws on 18^th March, 1^st April, and 14^th
• The Manitoba PNP held draws on 26^th March and 9^th
• The Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program held a draw on 26^th

Canadian authorities have also acknowledged that obtaining necessary documents may be difficult for applicants during this time. Canada will not be rejecting any applications because of incomplete documentation. So, while immigration to USA is to be suspended for at least a 60 day period, Canada remains open to foreign nationals, and on track to achieve its target of welcoming 341,000 new immigrants in 2020.
