Canada’s Atlantic Immigration Pilot (AIP) has been gaining momentum ever since it was first launched in 2017. The program has been able to position itself as a promising choice among those seeking to migrate to Canada. What is Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program?

The Atlantic Immigration Pilot allows foreign applicants with valid job offers to apply for permanent residency status in Canada. The program was initially launched as a pilot program, however, after seeing its massive success, the government decided to make it permanent in 2022. Since its launch, the program has helped Atlantic Provinces to fill immigration quotas by welcoming 6, 000 new permanent residents every year.

What are the eligibility requirements?

The Atlantic Immigration Program is designed for foreign skilled workers in Canada or abroad, or who have recently finished their education at a recognized university in Atlantic Canada. However, to qualify for this Canada PNP program, you must first have a valid job offer from a designated employer in one of Canada’s Atlantic Provinces.

Additionally, you are required to meet other eligibility requirements to apply for this visa pathway:

Work experience requirements:

  • You must demonstrate a minimum of 1, 560 hours (30 hours per week for a year) of employment in the last five years. The working hours could include full-time or part-time jobs.
  • Your work experience should be in TEER 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4 National Occupational Classification (NOC). Your job duties must also align with NOC chosen by you.
  • Your work experience should be paid. Internships, volunteer experience, and self-employed work do not count.

 

International graduates in Canada are exempt from work experience conditions if they:

  • Completed at least a two-year degree, diploma, certificate, or trade or apprenticeship certification from a recognized post-secondary institution in Atlantic Canada.
  • Lived as a full-time student in Atlantic Canada.
  • Lived in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, or Newfoundland and Labrador for at least 16 months in the last two years before their graduation.
  • Have a legal immigration status and permit to study and work in Canada.

 

Educational Requirements:

You must meet one of the following educational requirements to apply for the AIP:

  • If your job offer is for a NOC TEER 0, you must have at least a one-year Canadian post-secondary educational credential (or foreign equivalent).
  • If your job offer is for a NOC TEER 2, 3, or 4, you must have at least a Canadian high school diploma (or foreign equivalent).

 

Language Requirements:

The minimum language requirement is based on the NOC under which you have received a job offer.

  • For a NOC TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3, you need at least a CLB/NCLC 5.
  • For a NOC TEER 4, you must score at least a CLB/NCLC 4.

 

Settlement funds:

You must also prove that you have access to sufficient funds to immigrate to Canada. For single applicants, the settlement funds requirement is CAD 3,303. For a family of two, it’s CAD 4,112.

How do you get a job offer?

The Atlantic Immigration Program is different from Canada Express Entry in the sense that it requires a job offer, whereas the latter does not. So, if you have a job offer from one of the Atlantic Provinces, there’s no better immigration option than the AIP.

To secure an employment letter, you must actively apply for job vacancies posted by employers in Atlantic Canada. Please ensure that these employers must be designated by AIP. Each province publishes a list of employers who are willing to recruit foreign skilled workers via this program.

With a valid job offer from a designated Atlantic employer, applicants can go ahead with the further process. The process starts with collaborating in an endorsement phase with your employer along with the creation of a settlement package highlighting the personalized settlement services the candidate will receive after arriving in Canada.

Once the province reviews and approves the job offer and settlement package, the candidate will receive a nomination from that specific province and will be able to apply for a Canadian permanent residence. Moreover, they can also start working in Canada by applying for a work permit. In the meantime, they can await the decision on their Canada PR visa application.
